T-Shirt Fits - What's the difference?

If you’ve ever shopped in your life, a t-shirt is almost guaranteed to be one of the things you have looked for. Shopping for a product these days is more convenient than it has ever been. With a seemingly endless number of products and an equally endless amount of sellers, finding the perfect t-shirt for you is a piece of cake, right? Well, maybe not.

In this article we will provide you with a little information about t-shirt fits that will hopefully make it a little bit easier for you to find that perfect tee. We will focus on the terms used to describe the fits and how they compare to each other. How they compare to each other is important because sometimes that is the only way to tell what type of fit it is.

So, let’s start with a classic fit t-shirt. We’ll start there because this is the fit that all others are based on. This is also a suitable place to start because this is the beginning of the problem of finding a good-fitting t-shirt. This is because there is no standard. You can buy five classic fit tees from five different companies and they will all fit differently. But here are the main attributes they have.

  • Not tight, not too loose. Usually sits between a loose fit and a slim fit.
  • Typically has a straight silhouette (Beware! Not all of them do and this makes a huge difference in how it looks on you.)
  • Sleeves are on the loose side with larger arm holes for ease of movement.
  • Medium-length. The bottom of the shirt will end near the hips of the “typical” wearer.

Ok, let’s get to the oversized t-shirt. The oversized t-shirt is quite popular right now but it has really been a go to for many since the 80’s. Back then, if you wanted an oversized t-shirt, you would simply size up. Even today, that’s all you really need to do. You can make any t-shirt an oversized tee just by going a size larger than your regular size which I’m sure many of you know. Today’s oversized t-shirts are a bit different than that though, going for a very boxy look on both the body and arms is quite common. Some aren’t even that long, still just a medium length, like a classic fit. Personally, I think this fit is popular and has been popular for so long simply because the fit doesn’t really matter. It’s big, too big really. But that’s the idea. All the differences from one manufacturer to the next really don’t matter that much because it all gets lost in the bagginess. That’s why I wore them for years, takes a lot of frustration out of shopping.

Next up, the tall t-shirt. Now this one is simple; a tall t-shirt is a classic fit t-shirt with a longer length. That’s really the only difference. However, just like every other t-shirt in the world, this can vary greatly depending on the manufacturer. These are made primarily to fit people who may be a little taller than average. Most basic t-shirts are made short in length even for the average height person, so you can imagine how that would fit someone who is quite tall. Of course, some people would choose this fit over a classic fit because they prefer that longer shirt look. I’m one of those people in fact. It’s one of the reasons we started Tolerance Apparel.

The longline t-shirt. The fit of these shirts can vary a lot, as usual, but the main distinguishing feature of these shirts is that they can be very long. They might be a little longer than a tall t-shirt or, they could go down to the knees or beyond. So long in fact, it is sometimes called a t-shirt dress. This may not be your everyday shirt or maybe it is, style is a very personal thing. But, wearing one of these can be a fashion statement in itself and it will be noticed by others. Most examples I’ve seen tend to be a slimmer fit and have a curved hem. I don’t see this worn too often, I assume because it can be such a fashion statement that it also makes it a little trendy, falling in and out of style.

So, you may be asking, what fit are the Tolerance Apparel Favorite and Perfect Tee’s? Well, I would consider our tees, tall t-shirts. They are not excessively long but they are a couple inches longer than an average classic fit. We also made them slimmer than an average classic fit because this looks much better when worn. Earlier when I was writing about how having a straight silhouette can make a big difference in how you look, this refers to what the t-shirt does from the chest to the bottom hem. Most t-shirts get wider as they go down toward the hem and if they get too large it can look terrible and you might not even realize why. So, for this reason, our shirts have a very straight silhouette.
